FOLLOW ME THROUH: SAMMY J. STARK SINGS TRUTH! (A Review)
Sammy J. Stark joins the Elite group of artistes who have lended their craft to telling the truth about the state of the Nation. He began professionally singing in 2017, with the release of Overcomers, he however claims to have being singing all his life. He doesn't do this one alone he gets help from Realzy and his producer John P, who did a brilliant job on this track.
Of course the artwork gives an inkling of what is to come. One of the many great pictures taken from Lekki Toll gate. The unsuspecting crowd unaware of the danger about to befall them and the bloodbath that would ensue hours after this picture was taken.
Let's dive Right in.
The intro begins with an internal battle. The speaker is torn between going home and staying out because "home no longer feel alright". He also understands however that to see the light he has to fight.
Realzy verse:
He saunters in with the everyday experience of Nigerians, keep in mind we had just witnessed the most heartless and horrible massacre of modern Nigerian protesters at the LEKKI Toll Gate. We wake up to news of people dying, videos of grieving Mothers spiced with the denials and lies from the Government but also the sacrificial resolve of change seekers. Welding so much power and wealth "they" only use it to create a suppressive and insecure atmosphere for young ones.
He provides the open secret answer as revolution which remains the goal and aim. Silencing and killing them is no "solution". The strangeness of Home is mentioned again!
He also for goes on to mention the rise in killings in recent years(Boko Haram, Fulani herdsmen, the police are few out the many sources of these killing). At this point in the verse he refers to "blood on the flag" a picture that went viral from the scenes of the LEKKI Toll Gate killings!
The pre chorus and chorus:
The prechorus re-echoes the resolve and devotion to "sing" and "scream" till we arise and till an expected response is gotten, the same resolve the protesters at LEKKI had singing the national anthem. The chorus was the response protesters hoped to get from the government, Assurance and a promise to be beside them and take them home. We all know how that turned out.
PS: Sammy J. Stark showed off a little in the chorus.
Second Verse
Sammy J. Stark takes over also displaying the same reluctance to go home, however offers condition of assurance and re-assurance. Sammy addresses the intended aim of the cries; The protesting youth didn't clamour for food, increase in salaries or direct employment but "life is all" they wanted. Amidst the unfair treatment, suppression and conditioning they only desire a conducive atmosphere to live in.
The beautiful chorus waltzes in.
Third Verse:
At this point the opposition is not as contentious as it was at the beginning of this song. The desire to take that step towards home grows stronger but doesn't overwhelm the thirst for revolution. The need for convincing reasons to be seen is dire. The resolve is deliberately being weakened but the focus remains the same."show me the reason". These were the feelings of the protesters at the climax of the protests,The youth did not want to stay on the streets, Nobody wants the economy paused or grounded but if that's was it would take then "we die here" Unfortunately many did.
The bridge:
The bridge however is a double edged sword and also the metamorphosed state of the protest. Notice how it changes from "I will sing" to "i will sing FOR you". It is a message to all political office holders of the risen interest in how they govern. Do well and get praised, do otherwise and the songs won't be melodious.
The fight is not over and whatever form of protesting would be pursued to the latter!
